Oral & Jolly Phonics

Our Oral & Jolly Phonics program is the perfect start for your child to become a confident English reader and speller. We introduce and practice key letter combinations like blends and digraphs, with a special focus on clear, native-like pronunciation. By the end of the program, your child will have stronger skills in reading, spelling, and speaking English with confidence!

What is Phonics?

Phonics is a way of teaching reading and writing that focuses on connecting sounds to letters. It helps children learn how to break words into individual sounds and then blend those sounds together to read words. For example, with phonics, a child learns that the letters “c-a-t” make the sounds /k/ /æ/ /t/, which come together to say “cat.” This method makes it easier for kids to decode new words and improves their overall reading skills.

Courses

Course Levels

Level 1

Students begin by learning the 26 letter sounds (A–Z). They also practice recognizing uppercase and lowercase letters, matching sounds to letters, and writing letters with correct formation. Simple oral blending is introduced using basic words like “sat” or “mat.” This level builds a solid foundation for reading.

Level 2

Children start blending sounds to read short words like “dog” and “pen.” They focus on short vowel sounds (a, e, i, o, u) and learn to read and spell simple CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words. Short phrases and sentences are introduced to boost reading fluency and confidence.

Level 3

This level introduces common digraphs such as ch, sh, and th. Students also learn word families like -an, -it, and -op to help them recognize spelling patterns. Reading fluency improves as they read longer sentences, answer simple questions, and begin writing short words and phrases.

Level 4

Students explore long vowel sounds and learn spelling rules like the “Magic E” (e.g., cake, bike). They read and spell more complex words and compare short and long vowel patterns. Story reading and sentence writing are used to strengthen comprehension and expression.

Level 5

In Level 5, students are introduced to silent letters, such as k in knock or b in lamb. Students read longer passages with confidence and begin writing full sentences and short paragraphs. This level helps children transition smoothly into fluent reading and basic writing.
